Nikki Giovanni uses Quilts as an example of how even when she gets older and less useful she can still be helpful in the growing process of something else. Nikki is explaining how she is no longer at her prime and uses the simile of comparing herself to an old tablecloth or blanket who no longer does their job. In the end she is telling people do not let your life be in vain, when you are no longer good on your won then you should take a square of yourself and pass it on to someone else. She wants to know she has done something even when she is gone.
