Starting in the 1940's in New York City the beat poets were interested in defying conventional writing. The heart of the movement was established as San Francisco in the 1950's. Poets like Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, and Gary Snyder began the movement by questioning mainstream topics such as politics and even culture in the time following World War 2. The basis of the movement was fighting traditions and conforming to social norms.
