Slam has been described as the revival of poetry in performance. Emerging in the 1990's Slam was one of the most lively and exciting movements of it's time period. The idea rose from the poetry slams, or poetry competitions, taking place all over America. This idea received many negative reviews from professional school related poets. What made this idea popular was the wide acceptance of it by young poets and people of diverse backgrounds.
