Beginning around 1960 New York School poetry started in New York City. This style was influenced heavily by surrealism and modernism. Some major artists of the movement included John Ashbery, Barbara Guest, and Frank O'Hara. The New York School Movement has been described as serious, ironic, and having an urban sensibility. Ashbery describes the movement as a philosophy of life.
